It was a truly wild game for Mayfield and the Bucs. He marched the offense down the field and found Chris Godwin for a short touchdown on the first drive. Tampa’s defense scooped up a fumble for a touchdown on their first opening drive and then Mayfield got three more points on the board to give them a 17-0 lead. Following a punt return touchdown from the Saints, Mayfield melted down with three interceptions on his following four drives. The Saints out-scored the Bucs by 20 in the second quarter and appeared to be on the verge of an upset at halftime. Mayfield settled down in the second half and calmly picked apart the Saints’ defense over the final two quarters, quashing any hopes of a divisional win for New Orleans. It wasn’t the prettiest game for Baker, but it’s one that talking heads will rightfully deem as “gutsy.” Mayfield will look to clean things up in a potential shootout with the Ravens in Week 7.
