Steele (6’0/228) was the 21st-ranked player on Bruce Feldman’s College Football Freaks List for the 2023 season. The former Ball State running back transferred to UCLA ahead of the 2023 season and racked up 167-847-6 in his lone year with the Bruins, while also catching 17 passes for 163 yards and another two scores. While he may be an athletic freak, Steele lacks the speed (4.75 40-yard dash) we’d like to see accompany his size and 37.5-inch vertical jump. A leap from MAC play to the Pac-12 resulted in Steele’s efficiency numbers taking a hit, while his breakaway rush totals were also cut nearly in half. He didn’t earn an invite to the combine, which could be an early signal that his days in the NFL could be short. However, Steele’s usefulness as a pass-catcher (58 career receptions) could help him stick around for a bit. He’ll likely need to show he can also contribute on special teams – which could prove challenging, as PFF does not have him recorded as having ever played a special teams snap in college. Steele joins TCU running back Emani Bailey among the Chiefs’ early crop of UDFA talent. The two will likely be competing for a roster spot this summer.
