Colts WR Josh Downs (ankle) said he is “real close” to returning.

Downs did not practice on Wednesday but said he ran some routes. The second-year receiver hasn’t ruled out the possibility of playing in Week 1 against the Texans, but the real tell will be his practice status later in the day. If he can log a limited session before the end of the week, Downs may be ready to go for the opener. If not, rookie Adonai Mitchell could see a bigger role as the No. 2 receiver opposite Michael Pittman Jr.
